چکیده

Phonon calculations based on first principle electronic structure theory, such as the Kohn–Sham density functional theory, have wide applications in physics, chemistry, and material science. The computational cost of first principle phonon calculations typically scales steeply as O(N4 e ), where Ne is the number of electrons in the system. In this work, we develop a new method for reducing the computational complexity of computing the full dynamical matrix, and hence the phonon spectrum, to O(N3 e ). The key concept for achieving this is to compress the polarizability operator adaptively with respect to the perturbation of the potential due to the change of the atomic configuration. Such an adaptively compressed polarizability operator allows accurate computation of the phonon spectrum. The reduction of complexity only weakly depends on the size of the band gap, and our method is applicable to insulators as well as semiconductors with small band gaps. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method using one-dimensional and two-dimensional model problems.

Ab Initio Study of Chirality Effects Onphonon Spectra, Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Nearly Samediameter Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes

In this paper, we have used density functional perturbation theory (DFPT) and Pseudo-potential method to calculate the phonon spectrum, phonon density of states (DOS), specific heat capacity and mechanical properties of (5,5) armchair and (9,0) zigzag Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes (SWCNTs). Our calculations show that Young’s modulusfor (5,5) and (9,0) nanotubesare higher than 1TPa. We have also ...

Ab initio Study of Simple Mg-Ene Reactions of Propenyl Magnesium Halides and Ethylene (Type-I Intermolecular Reaction)

The insertion of an olefinic C=C bond into a metal-carbon bond is of potential interest as a preparativeroute to new products and as results of C-C coupling reactions to organic compounds. The allyl compoundsof Mg, react with an olefin by inversion of the allyl group via a six center transition state. These precyclicreactions may be one of the most important classes of organic reactions. The re...

Monte Carlo formulation of ab initio phonon transport and its application to the study of kinetic effects in graphene ribbons MASSACHUSET -

We present a deviational Monte Carlo method for solving the Boltzmann equation for phonon transport subject to the linearized ab initio 3-phonon scattering operator. Phonon dispersion relations and transition rates are obtained from density functional theory calculations. The ab initio scattering operator replaces the commonly used relaxation-time approximation, which is known to neglect, among...
